Exploring the Minimax Hailuo AI Image-to-Video Generator

  • by

In this demonstration, we take a closer look at the Minimax Hailuo AI Image-to-Video Generator, an emerging tool in the AI-powered video creation space. I’ll be using it to create scenes for Starbound Part 4, my latest project. While the tool shows great potential, it is still in development, with some key limitations.

Testing a Scene with Minimax Hailuo

For this test, I used a scene where a guard enters a room and gets shot. Minimax Hailuo AI generated the video from a single image, simulating the guard’s movement from walking through a door to falling after being shot. The result was visually impressive, though not without quirks. When the guard hit the ground, the body folded unnaturally, distorting in a way that broke immersion. Still, it managed to capture the moment well, despite the imperfections.

AI Rendering and Performance

One major issue with Minimax Hailuo is its rendering time. The video took a while to process, and with thousands of users ahead of me in the queue, I had to wait over an hour for my scene to be generated. It’s clear that the platform is still scaling, and long wait times could be a significant challenge for creators needing quicker outputs. With around 6,000 people ahead, I was informed that the estimated wait time was 73 minutes.

The cost to run each render was 30 credits, which may add up for creators looking to produce multiple videos quickly.

Using the Tool: Interface and Flexibility

The Minimax Hailuo interface is straightforward, allowing users to either upload an image or enter a descriptive prompt. For my scene, I uploaded an image of the guard and added a prompt: “guard shot and falls down off camera.” I also specified that I wanted the camera to remain still, unlike my previous render where the camera followed the character to the ground. This time, the AI adhered more closely to my prompt, though the final result still required some editing.

Despite its ease of use, the tool is clearly in its early stages. While body movements are generally well-captured, there are still occasional distortions.

Final Thoughts: Promising, but Needs Refinement

The Minimax Hailuo AI Image-to-Video Generator is an exciting tool for AI-driven video creation, offering an innovative way to bring scenes to life from simple images or prompts. However, the slow rendering times and minor glitches in body movements highlight that the platform is still developing. As it evolves, I’m optimistic that these issues will be ironed out, making it a more reliable tool for filmmakers.

For now, I’ll continue experimenting with Minimax Hailuo for select scenes in Starbound, cutting out any awkward parts and refining the final output.
